Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, with many being delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystems of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), as well as referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, and educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements for their destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your doctor keep track of your vaccination history and ensures you receive the necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age groups: Ages 50-64, Ages 30-49 with symptoms and no insurance, or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare Part B.
