Idaho consists of seven health districts that work in partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with various state and local agencies. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers for community presentations can also be requested. Immunization services are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site locations, often at little to no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunization records for individuals and their families, ensuring timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack health insurance coverage for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
