Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the surrounding ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site clinics. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Please contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for your travel destination. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your healthcare provider track your immunization history and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing: Healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms suggestive of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older who are NOT eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
