Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives cover areas where human health intersects with the environment and local ecosystems, including programs on Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be obtainable. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunization history. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC is available for pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specified age groups.
