Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. Services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **These programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational resources can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site clinics. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Travelers should contact the local health department to determine required vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines timely. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community resources, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC caters to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income criteria, and fall within specified age ranges.
