Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. FAMILY PLANNING: This service includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which cover cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry, a free and confidential service, keeps track of your immunization history, ensuring you and your doctor are aware of your vaccination status and helping to ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program offering healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories.
