Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a variety of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive state plan for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs addressing the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are low cost or free for parents who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing: monthly healthy food purchases with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year; and Children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women who lack insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under age 50 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval required); or age 65+ not eligible for Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
