Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency service responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs addressing the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for families who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for vaccine requirements for specific destinations. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify for Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in the last five years or never had one; under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval required); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare Part B.
