Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with several state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a variety of services that may differ across districts, including community health nursing, home health services, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (including Permits and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water management, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and various birth control methods, with educational materials available upon request. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B and A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations and ensure they receive necessary vaccines timely. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women lacking insurance that covers these tests, meeting specific income and age criteria.
