Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by providing a variety of services that differ from one district to another. Offerings include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, with many services delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. It offers individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women, specifically those without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into certain age categories or have specific health concerns. Languages available include English and Spanish, with interpreters accessible.
