Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screening, STD screening, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site clinics. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Please contact the local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for each travel destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is the supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food purchases via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and access to recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program targets women without health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in the last five years; under age 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B. Languages offered include English and Spanish, with interpreters available.
