About this resource

Head Start is a national preschool initiative aimed at children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations manage Head Start centers across the country. Applications are open for children aged 3 and 4. Families must have incomes below poverty guidelines, and children should be 3 or 4 years old by August 31. The program also accommodates children with special needs or those at high risk, and a limited number of over-income children with special needs may be accepted. Services are provided at no cost and include assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social service needs. Required documentation includes proof of income, the child's birthdate, and immunization records. Head Start also offers supportive services such as social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, disability support, dental care, and transportation.
