Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by providing diverse services, which may differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Land Development programs oversee Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, providing various birth control methods and educational resources for community presentations. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals keep track of their immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and breastfeeding support to pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. General health information and referrals can be obtained through the Resource Nurse (Helping Hand Medical Access), and vouchers may be available for acute healthcare needs.
