Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with several state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified state plan for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals; a variety of birth control methods are also available, along with educational resources for community outreach. Immunizations are provided by local health departments through routine childhood vaccination clinics, which may be low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations require appointments, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and support for breastfeeding mothers, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Resource Nurse program provides general health information and referrals by phone or appointment, with potential vouchers for acute healthcare needs.
