Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local demands by offering a variety of services that can differ from one district to another. These services may include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bio Terrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs consist of: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments deliver routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine specific vaccine requirements for travel. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you, your family, and your doctor track immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. RESOURCE NURSE (Helping Hand Medical Access): General health information and referrals are available via phone and by appointment. The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program targets women without health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in the past 5 years or never had one; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
