Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. The services offered may differ across districts and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs focus on the relationship between human health and the surrounding environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool safety, and solid waste management.
