Panhandle Health District Senior Companion Program

The Senior Companion Program (SCP) creates volunteer opportunities for low-income individuals who are 60 years or older. These Senior Companions offer personalized support and assistance to other adults, focusing mainly on the frail elderly. Their contributions enable homebound individuals to achieve and sustain a high level of independent living. To qualify, applicants must be at least 60 years old, willing to commit 15-40 hours weekly, and adhere to specific income eligibility criteria that differ by state. Individuals with disabilities are also encouraged to participate. Senior Companion volunteers undergo 20 hours of initial training, with their volunteer stations providing an additional four hours of monthly in-service training during their tenure. These volunteers assist adults who face challenges with daily living activities, collaborating as part of a comprehensive care team to help homebound individuals live independently. Services provided by volunteers include short-term acute care, personal care, home management support, information provision, advocacy, and social or recreational activities. Volunteers receive a tax-free stipend or allowance, transportation and meal reimbursements, on-duty accident and liability insurance, and an annual health check-up. Those exceeding the income limits may still volunteer on a non-stipend basis under certain conditions while still receiving other benefits. The program operates in English.
