Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a variety of services, which may differ from one district to another. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Health District office can provide details regarding public health preparedness and communication systems, which work alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care Health Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to learn about required vaccines for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods each month available through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or have never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (must have clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or without Medicare part B.
