Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering a variety of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Health Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for them. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) keeps track of immunizations for you, your family, and your doctor, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines at the appropriate times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food options that can be bought with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative that offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program is for women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or who have never had a pap test, or under age 50 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval required), or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B. Languages: English, with interpreters available. Intake Procedure: Call for general information, locations, and appointments.
