Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office, which focuses on bioterrorism planning, collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. These include Day Care Health Inspections, Epidemiology (covering animal bites and food/waterborne illnesses), Food Establishment permits and inspections, Indoor Air Quality assessments, Lead Health Programs, Methamphetamine Lab inspections, Public Pool regulations, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water management, Public Water Systems oversight, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Reviews, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks vaccinations for individuals and their families, ensuring they receive the necessary vaccines promptly. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five.
