Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare as well as various state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering a diverse range of services that may differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care Health Inspections, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (including Permits and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (like Radon), and more. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and comprehensive health exams, including screenings for cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. Immunizations are provided for children at local health department clinics, with low or no-cost options available for those unable to pay. Adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a confidential service that tracks vaccination history. The WIC program supports Women, Infants, and Children by providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals.
