Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care Health Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs involve: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing) and referrals. Various birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who are unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about the specific vaccines required for different destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides: Healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year of age, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 who have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
