Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs tackle issues connecting human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development initiatives include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department for necessary vaccines. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
