Each district operates independently, governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local demands, providing diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for details on required vaccines for travel. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, health provider referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women who lack health insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms of potential breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
