About this resource
The Medical Reserve Corps can be reached at 208-533-3145. Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with various state and local organizations. Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, with many being delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information regarding available services in your area, reach out to your local District Health Department. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a range of birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines and age criteria. Language support is available through interpreters. For general information, locations, and appointment scheduling, please call.
