Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. They cater to local demands, offering diverse services that differ by district, such as community health and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are contracted through the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health facilities or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods via vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. It supports pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded program offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
