Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: The Environmental Health programs focus on the relationship between human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning assistance, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (such as cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department to determine the required vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your doctor track your immunization history and ensure you receive the necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Healthy foods monthly that can be purchased using WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of these categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer, or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B eligibility.
