Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Health District office can provide information on the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning), which collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or at special off-site events. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to find out which vaccines are recommended for specific travel destinations. Adults may also have access to vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive the necessary vaccines at the right time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods each month that can be bought with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program is for women who lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 without a pap test in the past five years or never had one; under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (clinician approval needed); or age 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
