Each district is governed by a board of health that is appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. These districts tailor their services to meet local needs, which can differ significantly from one district to another. Their offerings include community health nursing, home health services, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the interactions between human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystems of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.**Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections).FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community outreach upon request.IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide standard childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Travel-related immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about specific vaccine requirements for different destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines through the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccinations, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunization history and ensures you receive necessary vaccines at the appropriate times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that offers: Monthly healthy food packages that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual consultations with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program is available to women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or Pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a Pap test in five years or longer, or who have never had a Pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicating potential breast cancer (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older and not eligible for Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
