Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently, with a health board appointed by county commissioners, addressing local health needs and offering diverse services that can differ by district. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives cover the intersection of human health with the environment, addressing matters such as Day Care Inspections, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (permits, plan reviews, inspections), Indoor Air Quality (e.g., Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs focus on Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control options available. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests.
