Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another. Offerings include community health nursing, home health services, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs focusing on the relationship between human health and the environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development services encompass Mortgage Surveys, Public Water Systems, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for required vaccines for travel destinations. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: This program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
