Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, as well as the surrounding ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program providing healthy foods through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific income guidelines and age criteria.
