Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering a diverse range of services that can differ across districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs related to Environmental Health address the connection between human health and the physical environment, as well as the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods each month available through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women without insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms suggesting breast cancer (with clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or without Medicare part B.
