Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for specific travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the vaccines you need.
