Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands, offering diverse services that can differ between districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab investigations, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs oversee critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering a variety of birth control methods. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and families, ensuring they receive necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall into specific age categories or have concerning symptoms.
