Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local entities. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners, addressing local requirements with diverse services that can differ from one district to another. These services encompass community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for managing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, including: Day Care Inspections, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives cover: Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS are provided by local health departments through clinics, offering routine childhood vaccinations at low or no cost for qualifying families. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM offers healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with dietitians, and breastfeeding support to pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges or conditions.
