Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, and sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services include routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, with low or no costs for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and counseling for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance or who meet specific income guidelines.
