Head Start is a comprehensive preschool initiative available across the nation for children from families that meet specific income eligibility. Local nonprofit organizations operate these centers, and they accept applications for children aged 3 to 5. Eligible families are those whose income falls below poverty guidelines, and children must be at least 3 years old by September 1. The program also accommodates children with special needs or those considered at high risk, accepting a limited number of over-income children with special needs. Services provided include assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social needs at no cost. Families must provide income verification, proof of the child's birthdate, and immunization records. Head Start offers various supportive services, including social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, support for disabilities, dental care, and transportation. The program aims to enrich the lives of children, families, staff, and the community while helping families navigate life’s challenges through quality education and family-focused services. It serves low-income children aged 0-5 years with a four-day program that includes 12 hours of care each week, providing four meals daily. Parental involvement is encouraged, and positive parenting classes are offered to support educational development. Transportation is available, and services are primarily conducted in English.
