Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest service information in your area, reach out to your local Health District. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and community ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community outreach. Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations at their offices or special clinics, often at little to no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service to track vaccinations for you and your family. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition, providing healthy foods via vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community program information, healthcare referrals, individual counseling with dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five, with services available in English and interpreters upon request.
