Public mental health services are organized into key areas: Community Crisis Response and assistance for adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) or children with serious emotional disturbances. COMMUNITY CRISIS RESPONSE SERVICES serve as the initial intervention for adults undergoing mental health crises, which may include psychiatric symptoms such as self-harm or harm to others. Each welfare region in Idaho is equipped with a community health center and one or more satellite offices that offer 24-hour crisis response services, including hotlines, emergency psychiatric evaluations, treatment referrals, and consultations with law enforcement, local hospitals, and other social services as needed. SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS services are designed for individuals aged 18 and older who experience the most severe and ongoing forms of mental illness. Eligible individuals must have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder, or borderline personality disorder, with the condition being severe enough to disrupt functioning in at least two areas consistently or intermittently. SPMI services encompass screening and referral, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric and medical services, short-term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, and community supportive employment. The Mental Health Program is overseen by the Division of Behavior Health, with services available in English and interpreters accessible upon request.
