Idaho consists of seven health districts that collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district operates independently from state agencies and addresses local demands by offering a range of services that differ across districts. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutritional programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs cover areas where human health intersects with the environment and local ecosystems, including services related to daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program supplies nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet specific criteria, including those without insurance that covers these tests.
