Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with numerous state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, inspections), indoor air quality (radon), lead health initiatives, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Immunization services are available for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for eligible families. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunization records for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income guidelines, and fall within specific age criteria.
