Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. These districts address local requirements and provide diverse services, which can differ significantly from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health, the physical environment, and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Immunization services are offered for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at little to no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides supplemental nutrition, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five years old.
