Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives cover aspects where human health intersects with the environment and ecosystems. Key Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. IMMUNIZATIONS are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories.
