Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, as well as the community of flora and fauna. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, thorough physical exams (including cancer screenings and sexually transmitted disease testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics held at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about specific vaccines required for different destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Healthy foods monthly that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women who lack insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64; Ages 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicating potential breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
