Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from any state agency. These districts cater to local demands, providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another. Offerings include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning options, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which include cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about required vaccines for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to cover the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be provided. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information and healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and access to recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. This program is aimed at women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer, or age 65 and older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
