Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district operates independently of state agencies and tailors its services to meet local demands, which can differ from one district to another. Services offered include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office works alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and include areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision review, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunizations for routine childhood vaccinations are provided at local health department clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests.
