DISTRICT OFFICE: The seven health districts in Idaho operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from any state agency. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This encompasses programs focused on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools.** Land Development Programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (Family Planning): This offers Family Planning services, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings, as well as HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community presentations upon request. Temporary Medicaid card applications for prenatal care are also provided. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. To schedule an appointment, please contact your local health department, which will bill your insurance provider. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program that provides: monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women up to one year postpartum; non-nursing women up to 6 months postpartum; Infants up to one year; and Children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests. Eligibility includes meeting income criteria, being a U.S. citizen or having an Alien ID card, and being in specific age groups or having symptoms that require screening.
