DISTRICT OFFICE: The seven health districts in Idaho collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs and offer a variety of services, which may differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified plan for bioterrorism preparedness and response to public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs cover areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and ecosystems. **These programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health districts administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health district offices or special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health district to determine which vaccines are required for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations and ensure timely vaccinations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides supplemental nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children, offering healthy foods through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials.
