AVRE offers support to school-age children, their parents, and educators up to age 14, providing instruction in orientation and travel training both in school and the community. The program includes independent living skills training at home and school, Braille education, adaptive computer technology, and opportunities for social connection among peers. Additionally, AVRE organizes recreational outings aimed at enhancing social skills, independence, confidence, and self-esteem for children and teens who are legally blind. As a private, non-profit organization, AVRE serves individuals of all ages facing vision loss in several New York counties, including Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins. The intake process involves calling AVRE at 607-724-2428 for referrals, and there are no fees for services.
